Our Story: How Hope Took Root

OneHopeChildren was born from lived experience; from hardship, faith, and the enduring hope of a family determined to believe in a brighter future.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Felix Ugwuozor was born toward the end of the Nigerian Civil War, a conflict that reshaped the political and economic trajectory of Nigeria. Though too young to remember the war itself, he recalls the aftermath of displacement, economic hardship, and uncertainty. Those early experiences would later become the quiet foundation of his anti-poverty mission.

Felix’s father worked in the coal mines of Enugu, commuting nearly 24 kilometers each day after the mines reopened in 1972. A man of deep Christian conviction, integrity, and courage, he provided faithfully for his family despite immense sacrifice. Years of exposure to coal dust led to pneumoconiosis, black lung disease, and his illness placed tremendous strain on the family. When Felix was just ten years old, his father passed away, leaving six children to be raised by a widowed mother with limited formal education but extraordinary resolve.

Though resources were scarce, hope was not. Felix’s mother worked multiple menial jobs to keep her children in school. Some years, tuition delays meant Felix stayed home at the beginning of term until fees could be gathered. Yet his parents’ belief in education, and in God’s faithfulness, never wavered.

In the midst of suffering, prayer anchored the family. Daily Mass, the Rosary, and the example of faithful mentors shaped Felix’s calling to the priesthood. Reflecting on his parents’ sacrifices and their steadfast hope “despite all evidence to the contrary,” the vision for OneHopeChildren began to take shape.

Today, that same hope lives on, empowering vulnerable children to access education, stability, and the opportunity to thrive.
